Justification for guidance
Per 1 January 2025, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will update their standards to allow athletes to donate blood and blood components: "Donation of blood or blood components (e.g. plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and peripheral blood stem cells) including by apheresis is not prohibited when performed in a collection center accredited by the relevant regulatory authority of the country in which it operates."
In 2024 and prior, under WADA standards, the following are prohibited: "the Administration or reintroduction of any quantity of autologous, allogenic (homologous) or heterologous blood, or red blood cell products of any origin into the circulatory system except donation by Athletes of plasma or plasma components by plasmapheresis performed in a registered collection center."
